future?

this one i made around 1998, but i keep updating the original text.It is so actual: the sea level rising, the current "verrommeling" of the Dutch landscape and the actual discussion about buildings that can withstand inundations. Probably i will have to extend this theme into designing more seriously.
Where and how will we live in the future? But also: an expression of the actual uneasyness. Maybe this is a folly, but a folly to think about.

Water has always fascinated me, and since i grew up near the coast and lived near the Rhine i feel it this very strongly.

This image began as a play with a rendering program (i used Bryce) where i build some stream ridge or dune like envinronment surrounded with water. It became serious especially after Katharina, the hurricane that more or less washed away downtown New Orleans. Also in the Netherlands we had to deal with the danger of flooding and be aware of the massive work that wouldl be needed to keep up with coming water from the Rhine and the higher sealevel. It was not anymore about making the urban area landscape behind the dikes more beautifull, nicely designed. It was about designing and preparing for a future with dry feet and a region that can be used for future living. This could be more than noncommittal play on the computer, nice for a picture . This was a possibility that designers should consider.
